How do steel casting manufacturers repair steel casting defects?

2025-04-14

Steel casting manufacturers leave the factory with zero defects. Many steel casting factories will identify defects in time and rectify them during the processing of steel castings. Therefore, when we encounter a casting defect, how do we address it? What should we be mindful of?

1. When repairing the required castings through welding, a strict review of both the specific defect situation and the welding repair process operations is essential.

2. When using gas cutting or carbon arc gouging to remove defects in steel castings, it's necessary to preheat considering the chemical composition, defect size, and properties of the casting.

3. Product defects may be identified during quality and visual inspections, or during heat treatment or machining in a steel casting foundry. Upon detection of defects, they can be addressed through machining, chiselling, and gas cutting.

4. After a casting defect is repaired by welding, the repaired weld and the areas close to the base metal must be polished, and it must then be confirmed that the defect has been processed in accordance with the specifications regarding the number, size, and design drawings of the previous defect.

5. Once the defects found in the produced steel castings have been addressed, non-destructive testing is employed to verify and confirm that the defects have been completely rectified. If the shallow grooves or pits resulting from the defect do not compromise its strength, they can be smoothed into an arc-shaped gentle transition surface, and then the final inspection of the casting will be conducted by the steel casting foundry, with the factory dispatching after passing the inspection.
